FAQ

Flooring boxes calculator questions

Quick answers for square feet, box coverage, cut waste, underlayment, and extra boxes.

How many boxes of flooring do I need? +

Measure the floor area, add a cut-waste allowance, then divide by the square feet covered by one box. Round up because flooring is sold in whole boxes.

How much extra flooring should I buy? +

A straight plank or laminate layout often starts around 10% extra. Diagonal, tile, herringbone, angled rooms, closets, and many doorways can need 15% to 20% or more.

Should I use the box coverage or plank size? +

Use the square feet per box printed on the product label. Plank or tile size is useful for layout planning, but box coverage is the cleanest buying input.

Do flooring boxes include underlayment? +

Some products include attached pad and some do not. Check the installation instructions before adding separate underlayment or vapor barrier rolls.

Should I keep an extra flooring box? +

Keeping one extra unopened box can help with future repairs, dye-lot matching, and discontinued products. Confirm return rules before buying extra.
