Measuring a roof trips people up because the number that matters is the roof surface area, not the floor area of the house. A steep roof can be 15 to 40% larger than the footprint it sits on. Get that part right and the rest — squares, bundles, underlayment — falls into place.
This guide walks the three numbers you need: the footprint, the pitch, and the roofing squares. Then you can drop them into the roofing calculator to get bundles and underlayment.
1. The footprint
The footprint is the flat outline of the roof seen from above, including the overhangs — not the inside floor area. For a simple rectangular house, measure the length and width at the eaves (where the overhang ends) and multiply. A 40 ft by 30 ft outline is a 1,200 square foot footprint.
For an L-shaped or more complex home, break the outline into rectangles, measure each, and add them up. Detached garages and porches that share the roof get measured too.
2. The pitch and its multiplier
Pitch is how much the roof rises per 12 inches of horizontal run. A roof that climbs 6 inches over 12 inches of run is a 6/12 pitch. The steeper the pitch, the more roof surface sits above the same footprint.
The exact slope factor is the length of the slope compared to its flat run, which works out to sqrt(1 + (rise/12)²). You do not have to do that math by hand — here is what common pitches come out to:
| Pitch | Multiplier | 1,200 sq ft footprint becomes |
|---|---|---|
| 4/12 | 1.054 | ~1,265 sq ft |
| 6/12 | 1.118 | ~1,342 sq ft |
| 8/12 | 1.202 | ~1,442 sq ft |
| 10/12 | 1.302 | ~1,562 sq ft |
| 12/12 | 1.414 | ~1,697 sq ft |
To find the pitch, hold a level horizontally against the roof, mark 12 inches along it, and measure straight down to the surface at that mark. That drop in inches is your rise. You can also measure against a rafter inside the attic, which keeps you off the roof.
3. Roofing squares
Roofers price and order by the square, which is 100 square feet of roof surface. Multiply the footprint by the pitch multiplier to get roof area, then divide by 100.
For our 1,200 sq ft footprint at 6/12: 1,200 × 1.118 = about 1,342 sq ft of roof, or roughly 13.4 squares. Add waste for cuts at hips, valleys, and ridges — about 10% on a simple gable, more on a complex roof.
From squares to a shopping list
Once you have squares, the material follows: about 3 bundles of shingles per square, plus underlayment by the roll, plus starter, ridge cap, drip edge, and flashing. The roofing calculator turns your footprint and pitch into bundles and underlayment rolls with waste built in, so you do not have to chain the steps by hand.
When to get a professional measurement
Ground measurements and pitch estimates are great for planning and for sanity-checking a quote. For the actual order — especially on a cut-up roof or a steep one — a tape measurement on the roof, a satellite roof report, or a contractor measurement avoids coming up short mid-job. Running short on shingles from a different dye lot is a visible problem.
FAQ
How many squares is a 2,000 square foot roof?
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface, so 2,000 square feet of actual roof area is 20 squares. Note this is roof area, not house floor area — a steeper pitch makes the roof larger than the footprint below it.
How do I find my roof pitch?
Pitch is the rise in inches over 12 inches of horizontal run. Hold a level out flat, measure 12 inches along it, then measure straight down to the roof surface. A 6 inch drop is a 6/12 pitch. You can also measure inside the attic against a rafter.
Can I measure a roof from the ground?
You can get a planning estimate from the ground by measuring the building footprint and estimating the pitch, then applying the pitch multiplier. For a final order, a tape measurement on the roof, a satellite roof report, or a contractor measurement is more accurate.
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Most standard 3-tab and architectural shingles come 3 bundles per square. So a 20-square roof needs about 60 bundles before waste. Always confirm the bundles-per-square on the specific product.
